Energy

This morning I woke up feeling like I got hit by a bus or was out partying late. Not exactly like a hangover cause there was no headache, but my eyes were puffy and I felt like I had been tense all night, from my jaw down to my ankles. I learned my mornings have to unfold a lot slower now. No rushing. Almost reluctantly. I need the silence, the chance to ease into the world, into my body.

My energy has been off for a while. Originally I thought I wasn't drinking enough water or getting enough sleep-although that could still be a thing-I'm learning that menopause wreaks havoc on your energy. I notice this most in the morning getting out of bed or sitting for a while. Sometimes I need a while before I even want to engage with anyone. I used to wake up and just go. Pop up, make a quick breakfast, some coffee, and immediately start my day. Hurling myself into the day and just living...whew...how did I do it?

But this season has taught me-not gently either-that energy can't be forced, you have to ease yourself into the day. So instead of forcing my body to operate from that old space, I've started moving my body slowly for a few minutes, stretching, and then waking it up by jumping or shaking gently. Water first thing and opening windows has always been a practice of mine. These things are more important now than ever.

This morning I brewed a cup of Root & Spice. I went to work 90 minutes early and sat holding my cup enjoying my brew in silence. The warmth felt comforting and calming. The scent reminded me of the days when I drank actual coffee, like the perfect morning.

I'm learning low energy is your body's way of telling you it needs something different. We should all reconnect with our bodies in a way that allows us to notice change before our bodies run out of fight. Honor it's needs before it's too late. Sit with yourself in silence for a while and scan your body to see what your body is trying to tell you. Be intentional, that's finally what I learned the last year.
